Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lesson

We are over half-way through this book. There have been lots of stops and starts along the way when my DH got sick and then for the summer. So, it has taken us a long time to get here. I love the book and can really see it working. However, the lessons now take about 30 minutes each and with two kids taking turns it eats up a HUGE chunk of school time since we are only doing a half-day.

So, I'm contemplating having them only one of them do a lesson each day. For example, on Monday Anna would do lesson 60 and on Tuesday Ian would do lesson 60. We'd skip Wednesday since Daddy is home and we like to do a fun science experiment. Then, on Thursday Anna would do lesson 61 and on Friday Ian would do lesson 61.

Pros:
1) More time for other school work. We often run out of time because reading lessons take so long!
2) They wouldn't have to play Starfall as much (what they do while the other is having their lesson). They don't mind and it is a good teaching tool. But, I think 30 minutes every day when they could be doing other things is a little excessive.

Cons:
1) Only 2 lessons/week as opposed to 4 or 5.
2) It will take us more than twice as long to finish the book.
3) Will they lose interest or become more forgetful about what they've done? Sort of like every day is a Monday?

I might try it for a few weeks and see how it goes, but was hoping for some ideas or feedback from you ladies. Thanks!

 

I think that sounds like a fine idea, especially if they have other exposure to reading. Quite honestly, I've never finished the book. It didn't work well for one of my boys and my two kids that it did work with just sort of took off like wildfire on their own somewhere between lessons 50 - 75.

 

I have not used the book, but I think I will go get it! I also like your plan! I am working with my girls on homeschooling, my dh is not sold on the whole idea so I am trying to SHOW him what can be done! Is this book something that can be used on the prek level (they won't be 4 until Jan)?

 

I used this book the year before my girls started K, so it can be used at the pre-K level.

 

We started it last year in pre-k. I believe the recommendation is for 4-6 year olds and very bright 3 year olds.
